Joinery is designed to meet the structural and aesthetic needs of the project. We use many notches that can not be duplicated by machines.

Our decisions on joinery are based on historical models of frames that have stood the test of time. We often use old English tying joints because it works very well and is found in 600 year old barns.

In today’s timber frames the complex and precision joinery is celebrated by showing off the notches, which may have been hidden or covered up in the old days. We believe that seeing what gives strength to a timber frame is part of the intangible sense of security one finds while living in one of these beautiful homes.

The practical beauty of a timber frame is that the structure carries the loads, freeing the enclosure system to insulate the home. We have used several methods and the following options are available depending on your requirements and the plan you choose.

S.I.P. Structural Insulated Panels

Are very high tech, They offer good insulation and can be pre-cut for speed of installation. They are however the most expensive and do not use natural materials.

Hybrid E.P.S. Wall Systems

We can offer economical lumber and EPS pre-cut panels. These have lower R-values and no sheathing, but go together well.

Cellulose Dense Pack

We have developed a lattice balloon framing system that is covered with a nylon mesh then blown full of Dense Pack Cellulose. This is a more natural product that uses recycled material that resists fire, insects, and vermin. This system is labor intensive but material costs are low and results are excellent.
